Importance of Work Life Balance in Organizations

Introduction

The ability to successfully balance work and personal obligations is known as work-life balance. It is crucial for everyone in all sectors. Work-life balance is the degree to which an individual prioritizes their personal and professional responsibilities in their life and the presence of work-related activities in their home.(“What Is Work-life Balance?,” n.d.) .

Managing work-life balance is a challenge for both employers and employees, especially in service industries. It involves balancing work and personal life, as they are two sides of the same coin. Increasing work pressure and globalization impact work-life balance, with technological advancements affecting prioritizing work, career, ambition, and professional life.(Goyal & Babel, 2015).

Work-life integration, or the effective merging of our personal and professional obligations, is a notion that is gaining popularity. According to this viewpoint, work is but one component of our life that must be taken into account along with other crucial issues like our relationships with our families, our communities, and our own personal wellbeing. Work-life integration more closely resembles a Venn diagram of shared interests than it does a scale with two opposing sides.  (Work-Life Balance: What It Is and 5 Ways to Improve Yours, 2023)

  6. It required changing the fair labour standards Act to require a 40 hour workweek in the 1940s when the typical worker put in 100 hours per week. The women's Liberation Movement made the need for work life balance a central tenet of its platform in 1980s, calling the flexible work schedule to allow women to work in offices while taking care of their families and homes during their off hours.
Working fewer hours and keeping work and home apart are now the main pieces of advise for juggling work and life. Gallup surveys indicate that, in spite of this guidance, the typical workweek for full time employees is 47 hours. And 39% of all workers say they put in between 50 and more hours every week.
